Between January 2018 and March 2018, specialty retail stores (sporting goods and F & B) are expected to grow by 6.6%, thus prompting Malaysian malls to allocate more space for these businesses. Brands such as JD Sports, Innisfree and Etude House continue to expand due to their appeal in a “bricks-and-mortar setting” amid challenges posed by weak consumer sentiment and the growth of online shopping. Foreign and local retailers progressed with their expansion in the domestic market, as 63 foreign brands entered Malaysia in 2017 regardless of the dampened retail environment. In 1Q18, 10 foreign brands including Off-White, Cold Stone, Nene Chicken, Forty Hands Café, Sunny Queen and Tai Croissant from eight countries set-up shop in Malaysia.
